Scenic North Shore Day Trip from Duluth: Waterfalls, Black Sand Beach & Pie Stop
Looking to pair rugged Lake Superior beauty with cascading waterfalls, unique beaches, and a slice of legendary pie? A scenic day trip from Duluth along Minnesota’s North Shore delivers all that—and more.
A Perfect North Shore Escape from Duluth
If you’re visiting Duluth and have a full day to explore, driving up the North Shore Scenic Drive (Highway 61) is one of the most breathtaking experiences Minnesota has to offer. Towering pines, dramatic cliffs, and endless views of Lake Superior are just the beginning. On this route, you’ll pass a string of unforgettable stops—each one perfect for nature lovers, casual hikers, and anyone craving a fresh-air reset.
During our trip, we visited Tettegouche State Park for its gorgeous hiking trails, relaxed at the unique Black Sand Beach in Silver Bay, explored the historic Split Rock Lighthouse, chased waterfalls at Gooseberry Falls, and finished the day with two slices of pie from Betty’s Pies—four-layer chocolate and classic cheesecake. Absolute perfection (though we may or may not have argued over the last bite of cheesecake).

Where Are These Places on Minnesota’s North Shore?
All of these gems are conveniently scattered along Highway 61, northeast of Duluth:
- Gooseberry Falls State Park – 40 miles (45 mins from Duluth)
- Split Rock Lighthouse State Park – 46 miles (55 mins)
- Black Sand Beach (Silver Bay) – 55 miles (1 hr 10 mins)
- Tettegouche State Park – 58 miles (1 hr 15 mins)
- Betty’s Pies – About 40 miles from Duluth, near Two Harbors
This scenic route can easily be done as a day trip or extended into a weekend getaway if you want more time to explore.
How to Get There: Duluth to the North Shore
From Duluth, hop on Highway 61 North, also known as the North Shore Scenic Drive. This drive hugs the Lake Superior shoreline, offering endless views and frequent scenic overlooks. The roads are paved, well-maintained, and accessible year-round—though summer and early fall are the most popular seasons.
Travel tip: Start early in the morning, especially in summer, to avoid crowds and enjoy the parks before the midday rush.
Tips for Visiting the North Shore State Parks
- Wear real hiking shoes: I foolishly wore sneakers that had zero grip—10/10 would not recommend.
- Pack layers: It can be sunny one minute and Lake Superior-level chilly the next.
- Bring snacks + water: Services are sparse, and you’ll be hungry after hiking.
- Buy the MN State Park day pass ($7 at the entrance or online ahead of time).
- Download offline maps: Your phone’s GPS will likely ghost you somewhere around Silver Bay.
One-Day Itinerary: Scenic Stops from Duluth
Here’s how to pack a full day of waterfalls, views, and pie into one satisfying North Shore adventure:
Morning
Start in Duluth – Grab coffee and breakfast to-go (we’re fans of Duluth Coffee Company or Amity Coffee if you’re on the east side).
First Stop: Gooseberry Falls State Park
Approx. 45 minutes from Duluth
This park is the crowd-pleaser of the North Shore, and for good reason. The Upper, Middle, and Lower Falls are gorgeous and easy to reach. We strolled the paved trails, climbed rocks (carefully), and lingered longer than expected just watching the water thunder down.
Allow 1–1.5 hours here—especially if you get pulled into taking “just one more” photo.

Midday
Second Stop: Split Rock Lighthouse State Park
Just 10 minutes further up Highway 61
Explore the historic lighthouse, perched high above the rocky cliffs of Lake Superior. The lighthouse tour is optional, but the overlook views alone are worth the stop. If you’re up for a short hike, the Little Two Harbors Trail gives you beach and cliff views in under an hour.

Third Stop: Black Sand Beach (Silver Bay)
Drive another 10–15 minutes to find this unexpected gem tucked away in Silver Bay’s Black Beach Park. This volcanic sand beach is unlike anything else on the North Shore. Bring a towel or just walk the shoreline and take in the views of the taconite-colored sand.

Afternoon
Fourth Stop: Tettegouche State Park
Just 5–10 minutes beyond Silver Bay
Tettegouche stole the show for us. It’s wild, lush, and full of trail options for every kind of hiker. Popular hikes include:
- High Falls Trail (about 1.5–2 miles round trip to the tallest waterfall in the park)
- Shovel Point Trail (short but offers panoramic cliff views)
You can spend anywhere from 1–3 hours here depending on how many trails you want to explore.
You could easily spend a full day here—but we gave it about 2 hours and still saw a lot.

Final Stop: Betty’s Pies
As you drive back toward Duluth, make a must-stop at Betty’s Pies in Two Harbors. This cozy, iconic roadside bakery has been serving up homemade pies since the 1950s.
We tried the:
- Four-Layer Chocolate Pie – rich, silky, and decadent
- Classic Original Cheesecake – creamy and perfectly balanced
Tip: Order a few slices to-go for later. There’s no shame in road trip pie.

Nearby Things to Do (If You Have Extra Time)
- Palisade Head – Cliffs and dramatic views between Split Rock and Tettegouche
- Silver Creek Cliff Tunnel Scenic Overlook – A stop just north of Two Harbors
- Castle Danger Brewery – Local beer in Two Harbors
- Lutsen Mountains (if you’re extending to a weekend trip)
FAQs About Visiting Minnesota’s North Shore
When is the best time to visit the North Shore?
Late spring through October is ideal. Fall = peak foliage and fewer bugs.
Can you swim at Black Sand Beach?
You can… if you like your lake water Arctic-style. Most folks dip their toes and call it good.
Are dogs allowed?
Yes! All state parks listed are dog-friendly as long as your pup is leashed.
Can you really do this in one day?
Yes—as long as you’re up early and don’t overstay at each stop. But if you want to linger, turning it into an overnight trip would be lovely too.
Final Thoughts: North Shore Beauty, One Scenic Stop at a Time
This day trip from Duluth was the perfect blend of nature, fresh air, a little adventure, and a lot of pie. Whether you’re looking to fill your camera roll, stretch your legs, or simply breathe deep that Lake Superior air, this route delivers.
If you’re local, you probably already know this—but if you’re visiting from out of state, don’t skip the North Shore. It’s a perfect taste of Minnesota’s wild beauty, and let’s be honest: any day that ends with pie is a good one.
